Palestinians battle Israeli wall Print
Written by BDR Editor

Palestinians and Israeli dissenters are getting together to fight Israel's plan to build another section of the separation wall in the occupied West Bank. According to environmentalists, the wall will stop water flow to the natural springs and thus threatens to dry out much of the Palestinian land. They also see the wall - illegal under international law - as a part of long-term Israeli policy to take more and more Palestinian land in the West Bank. But the Israeli government says their separation wall is for security reasons, in order to stop Palestinians carrying out attacks in Israel. Al Jazeera Sherine Tadros reports from Wadi Fukin, the village that is now at the centre of the legal battle.

Beijing beefs up cyber-warfare capacity
By Willy Lam While the furor over cyber-attacks against Google has lapsed somewhat, the Sino-American confrontation over the larger issue of Internet security and global digital warfare is expected to intensify in the near future. This is particularly in light of the deterioration of bilateral ties due to issues ranging from the value of the renminbi to US arms sales to Taiwan. Even more significant is the fact that despite Washington's criticism of Beijing's censorship of the Internet - as well as China-originated sorties against the networks of American government agencies and multinationals - the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leadership is devoting unprecedented resources to strengthening...

Australia tightens skilled migration rules
CANBERRA, Australia -- Australia tightened its migration rules Monday in favor of English speakers and professionals, saying the country has been attracting too many hairdressers and cooks and too few doctors and engineers. Immigration Minister Chris Evans blamed the overrepresentation of lower skilled immigrants on a system put in place by Prime Minister John Howard, whose government lost power in 2007 elections. "Under the Howard government, we had a lot of cooks, a lot of hairdressers coming...

No cries of 'Yankee go home' in Haiti
The Washington Post carried a story out of Port-au-Prince last week that was both flattering and alarming. “I want the Americans to take over the country,” a laborer told reporter Peter Slevin. “The Haitian government can’t do anything for us.” A medical student chimed in, “The American government should take care of us.” And at a food center where U.S. troops and U.N. peacekeepers distributed sacks of rice, a mother waiting with...

Karzai demands end to Nato raids
Afghanistan's president has demanded that Nato forces in his country stop all military raids on local villages. Speaking on Sunday at the annual Munich Security Conference, Hamid Karzai said civilian deaths and injuries inflicted during operations by international forces had caused deep anger among Afghans. "Ending operations in Afghan villages is what the Afghan people are seeking as a priority. "That means ending raids at night on Afghan homes, that means ending the arrests of Afghans in their homes and their villages, that means Afghanistan really gaining judicial independence completely and rather very very soon," he said. Karzai's comments come as US-led forces...
